The town of Beaverton was incorporated in 1893 and had a population of 400 at the time. Its name came from the large body of water formed by beaver dams. In 1868, the town's boundaries were platted out. Before that, the area was known as Beaverdam and consisted of marshes and swamps. Beaverton had its first post office and its streets are named after its first postmaster, George Betts. By 1893, the city had around 1800 residents. The first mayor was Alonzo Cady.
