When did Shawnee City get its name? Its population has been growing ever since 1890, when the town was incorporated. It is a suburb of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area, but never considered itself a bedroom community. Instead, the city aims to provide its citizens with a full range of services, while still remaining a self-sufficient community. As of this writing, the population of Shawnee City is just over 30,000.

A lot of people don't realize this, but Shawnee is actually home to many professional sports teams and sports organizations. The city has several sports fields for kids, as well as a community association for youth sports. Two bowling alleys are also located in the city. In addition, it once hosted a semi-professional football team called the Shawnee Warriors, who competed as the Millers in the Oklahoma Metro Football League. The city is also home to Jack Baer, who was affiliated with the Sooners baseball program. The town also produced Robert Galbreeth, who drilled Oklahoma's first oil well in Glenn Pool Field in 1907.

In 2010, the population of Shawnee was 29,857, and is part of the Oklahoma City-Shawnee Combined Statistical Area. Located in the Midwest, Shawnee is a multicultural oasis, blending the old west with the modern urban lifestyle. The city is home to four Native American tribes and has a rich pre-statehood history. With a population of nearly 30,000, Shawnee offers a wide range of recreational activities for all types of visitors.
