Overview of Georgia
The Republic of Georgia is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is bounded to the west by the Black Sea, to the north by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the east by Azerbaijan. Georgia covers a territory of 69,700 square kilometers (26,900 sq mi) and its population is estimated at slightly over 4.3 million. Since ancient times, Georgia has been a crossroads of civilizations. Located at the intersections of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, it was part of the Silk Road and other trade routes. Its culture, architecture, and food reflect the influences of its traders and conquerors.
Georgia is a unitary semi-presidential republic, with the president as head of state and the prime minister as head of government. The country is divided into nine regions, with two autonomous republics, Abkhazia and Adjara, within its borders.
Georgia has a mixed economy, with services representing 58% of GDP, industry and construction representing 31%, and agriculture representing 11%. The country is a member of the Council of Europe, the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the European Union, and the WTO.
